This year, I joined the Empty Shelf Challenge for my reading instead of making a list of books to complete. The second book I finished was One Thousand Gifts : A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are by Ann Voskamp.
I really did like this book, although the way she writes isn't totally what I love to read. But honestly, it wasn't hard to get through because I was so inspired by her story. She really taught me to find joy in all things. Even the hard things.
In One Thousand Gifts, Ann invites you to embrace everyday blessings and embark on the transformative spiritual discipline of chronicling God's gifts. It's only in this expressing of gratitude for the life we already have, we discover the life we've always wanted...a life we can take, give thanks for, and break for others. We come to feel and know the impossible right down in our bones: we are wildly loved--by God.
I started my own gratitude journal to record 1,000 gifts. I absolutely love the process of just noticing the little things. Once you've thanked God for all of the usual things, you have to dig deep. You have to look at all of the little details of your life and even thank him for the pain. It truly has helped me find a deeper sense of joy.
I highly recommend this book and if you're going to read it, make sure you have a journal to start for yourself.
