Clutter: Stop Organizing It & Get Rid of It

business home life simplicity Oct 08, 2014

Join the 6 Week Declutter Challenge!

Are you ready to get rid of the clutter for good?

For far too long I was living with the clutter. Shuffling it around, organizing it, giving it a new purpose or a new home, but never getting rid of it.

Which leads me to some thoughts on clutter and what we're actually doing with it.

clutter:
to fill or cover (something) with many things
to run in disorder
to fill or cover with scattered or disordered things that impede movement or reduce effectiveness

We often think of clutter as being physical. But clutter can be many different things. If it impedes movement or reduces effectiveness, the states of clutter are endless. Our minds are filled with clutter. We are on information overload and we can't. stop. downloading. Our schedules are cluttered with meaningless tasks. We're biting off more than we can chew.

But the problem is, we're not getting rid of it. We're just finding new ways to organize it. {Tweet that}

We buy every new storage solution for our physical clutter and expect...

Simple Fashion // My Honest Review of StitchFix

home life simplicity Oct 07, 2014

I recently signed up for a service called StitchFix. A stylist customizes a box of clothes for you (5 pieces) based on your size, taste, budget, etc. and it gets shipped to your door however often you choose. As someone who rarely gets out to shop and hasn't bought decent clothes in who knows how long, I was really excited to try this! And the best part is, you have 3 days to try on the clothes in your own home and send back whatever you don't want in a prepaid postage bag that comes in your shipment. It's so simple!

When you sign up for StitchFix you go through a series of questions on your taste, what you wear most often, what kind of styles you love and what kind you hate.

They even show you images with groups of clothing and you can choose whether you like it, love it, don't like it, or hate it.

There is so much detail in every question which gives your stylist a real sense of who you are. I was pleasantly surprised with how much you get to tell the stylist.

Simple Cleaning Tips

Simple Cleaning Tips

I'm pretty sure there is no one on this earth that actually enjoys cleaning. Like, Yes! Sign me up! Let me clean all freakin day! If you do, bless. Come clean my house.

Since cleaning is something I actually loathe, I've come up with some little shortcuts to keeping the home clean without breaking my back on a daily basis. I used to put things off for so long because I didn't have the time to do it perfectly. Since I couldn't be perfect I wouldn't do it at all. I am, what Jon Acuff would call, a procrastinating perfectionist.

I learned something from Jon about a year and a half ago when I read his book, Quitter. He says, “90% perfect and shared with the world changes more lives than 100% perfect and stuck in your head.” This has not only changed the way I approach my writing and business ventures, it's changed the way I look at just about anything. It's given me freedom to be 90% perfect at being a wife, a mom, in my cooking, and my cleaning...really just about...

Simply Sabbath

Simply Sabbath

I recently read Jen Hatmaker's book, Seven, and there was a section of the book where she talked about honoring the Sabbath. It was a beautiful chapter and I cried through most of it. I cried because I longed for Sabbath with my family. I cried because I felt the Holy Spirit drawing me in and saying, this is a gift I have given YOU. Not just Jen.

SabbathSunday, observed by Christians as the day of worship and rest from work in commemoration of Christ's Resurrection

And then my mind got technical. Well, Ryan's schedule is cray cray. He sometimes works nights, sometimes works days, sometimes gets the day off, and we never know this until the afternoon of said schedule.

I know.

And Sunday's we have church so although it's rest form "work," it's not technically rest because we're driving and serving and get home late and wiped out. Well, we could do Saturday..No....

Simplify Your Life By Saying No

Simplify Your Life By Saying No

I've always been a yes girl. As long as I can remember, my answer is almost always yes. Someone needs something? I'm your girl. There's a party? I'll be there. Church is starting a new team? Sign me up! I'm not really sure if it's just in my blood or if I have an inner need to please everyone. It most certainly could be both. In fact, it is. I'm a people pleaser through and through. That's how God made me. I want people to be happy. I want them to experience love, laughter, and joy. But I can easily let my own insecurities take over and do it for the wrong reason.

As we move along in life get married, have kids, grow communities, AND continue to say yes to anything and everything, we start to feel the ill effects of a busy life. We can grow so accustomed to saying yes that we forget how to say no. And while pretty much everything I've said yes to is something that is important or needed, it doesn't mean that I was the one who should be doing it.

So how do we learn to say no?

It's...

Simple Routines

Simple Routines

They say it takes 21 days to form a habit. I'm not so sure about that because I can be doing something for months at a time and then WHAM! I stop. Done. Over. Nada. BUT. I can say with all honesty that creating a couple of simple routines can help you form a habit, even if you miss a few steps here and there. And putting it down on paper, right where you'll see it, is going to make remembering so much easier!

Creating a simple morning and evening routine will help you to establish good habits. I started small with just three tasks in the morning and three tasks in the evening. I printed them out and taped them to my mirror to remind me. After a few weeks these things become routine and now I hardly even think about doing them. Once you’ve established a small routine, you can add a couple of tasks to each one. I don’t suggest more than five because we don’t want to be robots, right? But some routine is good and helps us stay on track with the things that just have...

How 15 Minutes Can Change Your Life

15 Minutes Can Change Your Life

I've always been one to bite off more than I can chew. I love saying yes to people and taking on new opportunities. My problem was, I couldn't ever finish ANYTHING! I set out with good intentions and just failed miserably. If you saw what my typical day looked like even a year or so ago, you'd think I was a kid in a candy store. Running about from task to task and never finishing any of them!

Enter my timer. {{And actually using it!}} I've always been a fan of using my timer but in February, when I was going through The Simplicity Project, I became more intentional about it. I used it like an addiction and it changed my life. I used it for everything. I used it when I was decluttering, I used it when I was blogging, I used it when I was teaching. You name it. I had a timer for it.

I sat down and made a master list of EVERYTHING I needed to get done. Room by room, closet by closet, task by task. I wrote it all down. Then, I picked just one little task, set my timer, and went for it....

Choose Simplicity

life simplicity Oct 01, 2014

choose simplicity

In a world that keeps spinning faster, I choose simplicity. In an age of have all, know all, and do all, I choose simplicity.

Today marks the first day of a 31 day writing challenge that I'm participating in. Of course I chose the topic of simplicity. Since I'm fresh off the launch of my new book, The Simplicity Project, I figure I might as well ride that train while it's still here. For the next 31 days I'll be writing on several facets of simplicity and hope to touch on many ways to simplify your life or enjoy simple pleasures.

When a person can’t find a deep sense of meaning, they distract themselves with pleasure.”

-Viktor Frankl

Everyone is searching for something. For their purpose, the meaning of life, or just the next best thing. Whatever it is, we most likely won't be happy when we find it. And while we're looking, and never satisfied, we're going to keep distracting ourselves to numb the pain. We'll take on more than we can handle, we'll buy more than...

You Be You: The Value of Authenticity

life Sep 24, 2014

you be you

The following a guest post by Kevin Buchanan of Living Out My Journey

I don’t know about you but I get tired of seeing fakes. You can normally spot them from a mile away. They are so busy trying to be what everyone else tells them to be that they have completely lost who they really are.

I used to be that way. Although I grew up with a sense of who I was, I still occasionally fell into the trap of being what others expected me to be. It took many years for me to consciously start living in the truth of who I was and who God created me to be.

Maybe that was you. Or maybe that IS you. Years of being what others wanted you to be, or told you that you should be have left you looking in the mirror, staring at an unfamiliar face.

Who is the real you?

Who are you meant to be?

What are you meant to offer the world?

Authenticity is the ability to know who you are and to live in its truth. You accept the good and bad in your life and you find the freedom that comes from simply being...

31 Days of Simplicity

31 days simplicity large

This October I will be participating in a writing challenge called 31 Days. Writers and bloggers are asked to pick one category and write on it for 31 days in a row. So. I have chosen 31 Days of Simplicity. Since I'm still in "Simplicity" mode with the launch of my book The Simplicity Project, I will be writing on simplifying our lives. We'll cover simplifying our life, homes, and schedules along with a few other fun topics like simple blogging, simple saving, and more. I'm really excited about it and  a little nervous because it really is a big commitment. Even though I LOVE writing, I do it on my own time and don't always share it here. But this will be a good habit to get into and I'm hoping you guys don't get too sick of me ;)

The 31 Days project is hosted by The Nester {who you all need to check out} author of The Nesting Place. If you're interested in doing your own 31 Days writing project, you can check out the site here. Pick your topic, link up next week, and write...
