20 Simple Ways To Improve Your Health

health life simplicity Oct 20, 2014

Several years ago I had sort of a "health awakening" and have been on that journey ever since. I wouldn't call myself a health nut by any means but I do try to make conscious decisions regarding the health of myself and my family. Before, I would just eat whatever and whenever not knowing that most of the food in our grocery stores were made up of harmful ingredients.

As you all know by now, I like to keep things as uncomplicated as possible.  Here are 20 simple ways to improve your health in this fast paced world we're living in. Most of these things we already know but over time we've gotten less enthusiastic and often forget to even think about them.

*Disclaimer* I am NOT a medical professional. If you need medical advice please seek a medical professional. I'm just a real human, who is also a real mom, in a real world trying to do what's best for my family.

1. Start your day right.

I'm a huge fan of getting off on the right foot. For me this means getting up well before my...

Simple Faith

faith life simplicity Oct 19, 2014

Simple faith. How can something seem so complicated yet actually be one of the simplest things we ever do in this life? And when we have that simple faith, it makes everything else fall into it's divine place just as it is meant to be.

Faith: confidence or trust in a person or thing

If I really believe what the Bible says, and I really believe that God works all things together for good, then all I really need is a little faith.

"Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you." Matthew 17:20

Then why is it so hard sometimes? Why do we get caught up in religion and works and he said she said? None of that even matters. When we have faith that God is who he says he is and that Jesus came to pay for us all, we have everything we need. Whether we're rich or poor, educated or not, mother or barren, father or son, black or white, Jesus is the only...

Simplify Your Schedule

life simplicity Oct 17, 2014

One very important section of my book is on the subject of time. We have got to be the busiest generation to walk this planet. It's quite maddening most of the time. We're running around like there's no tomorrow, biting off more than we can chew, signing our kids up for every sport and club under the sun. You know the drill.

And while most of the things we're doing aren't necessarily bad, they aren't necessarily for our own good either. The best way you can simplify your schedule is by taking a good look at how you're spending your time. When you really look at how you're spending each and every hour, you may find that you're actually wasting a lot of time. Time that you could spend doing things that are of more importance.

How many times do you catch yourself being sucked into your phone only to realize it's been an hour? An hour! Do you know what you can do in an hour? Read a book, write a letter, visit a friend, take a long bath, write a blog post...all those things we say we...

Simple Steps: One Step At a Time

faith life Oct 14, 2014

Take the first step in faith

It's been a little over a year since I wrote my first post on this here blog. Hard to believe how far I've come and at the same time, how far I have yet to go. But I wouldn't be here if I hadn't taken millions of simple steps. One simple step at a time. My very first post was on taking the first step and it's lead to endless possibilities, frustrations, joy, and pain.

I think of how different my life would look had I not taken the simple first step of publishing that first post. I was scared out of my mind. Thinking to myself, who do you think you are? A writer? Ha! That first step, as terrifying as it was, gave me strength. It gave me courage. With every post I became a little more brave. With every post, I became a little more seasoned.

And so it will be for the rest of my life. I will take one step towards what it is I feel God is telling me to do. The steps may not always pan out or lead me down the road I want. But at least I'll be moving forward. Even if it's just an...

Moving Past Failure

life simplicity Oct 10, 2014

let go of expectations

As you all know by now, I'm doing the Write 31 Days challenge hosted by The Nester. I'm supposed to write 31 days in a row on the subject of simplicity. It's been going smooth and I've actually impressed myself. But yesterday. It didn't happen. I was gone for most of the day and when I was home I was busy with the kids. Then I was gone again in the afternoon and evening so there just was no use in pushing myself just to get it done.

If this happened to me a year ago, it would have sent me on a downward spiral faster than you can imagine and I would have most likely given up. I used to beat myself up over the tiniest of failures. But I've since learned that if I don't just pick myself up, right where I am, and do the next best thing, I will continue to fail and possibly give up.

So here it is. Nothing fancy. No post for October 9th. It's not going to happen. Just a new post for October 10th telling you it's ok to fail. As a matter of fact, it's good to fail! You're human. You are...

Clutter: Stop Organizing It & Get Rid of It

business home life simplicity Oct 08, 2014

Join the 6 Week Declutter Challenge!

Are you ready to get rid of the clutter for good?

For far too long I was living with the clutter. Shuffling it around, organizing it, giving it a new purpose or a new home, but never getting rid of it.

Which leads me to some thoughts on clutter and what we're actually doing with it.

clutter:
to fill or cover (something) with many things
to run in disorder
to fill or cover with scattered or disordered things that impede movement or reduce effectiveness

We often think of clutter as being physical. But clutter can be many different things. If it impedes movement or reduces effectiveness, the states of clutter are endless. Our minds are filled with clutter. We are on information overload and we can't. stop. downloading. Our schedules are cluttered with meaningless tasks. We're biting off more than we can chew.

But the problem is, we're not getting rid of it. We're just finding new ways to organize it. {Tweet that}

We buy every new storage solution for our physical clutter and expect...

Simple Fashion // My Honest Review of StitchFix

home life simplicity Oct 07, 2014

I recently signed up for a service called StitchFix. A stylist customizes a box of clothes for you (5 pieces) based on your size, taste, budget, etc. and it gets shipped to your door however often you choose. As someone who rarely gets out to shop and hasn't bought decent clothes in who knows how long, I was really excited to try this! And the best part is, you have 3 days to try on the clothes in your own home and send back whatever you don't want in a prepaid postage bag that comes in your shipment. It's so simple!

When you sign up for StitchFix you go through a series of questions on your taste, what you wear most often, what kind of styles you love and what kind you hate.

They even show you images with groups of clothing and you can choose whether you like it, love it, don't like it, or hate it.

There is so much detail in every question which gives your stylist a real sense of who you are. I was pleasantly surprised with how much you get to tell the stylist.

Simple Cleaning Tips

Simple Cleaning Tips

I'm pretty sure there is no one on this earth that actually enjoys cleaning. Like, Yes! Sign me up! Let me clean all freakin day! If you do, bless. Come clean my house.

Since cleaning is something I actually loathe, I've come up with some little shortcuts to keeping the home clean without breaking my back on a daily basis. I used to put things off for so long because I didn't have the time to do it perfectly. Since I couldn't be perfect I wouldn't do it at all. I am, what Jon Acuff would call, a procrastinating perfectionist.

I learned something from Jon about a year and a half ago when I read his book, Quitter. He says, “90% perfect and shared with the world changes more lives than 100% perfect and stuck in your head.” This has not only changed the way I approach my writing and business ventures, it's changed the way I look at just about anything. It's given me freedom to be 90% perfect at being a wife, a mom, in my cooking, and my cleaning...really just about...

Simply Sabbath

Simply Sabbath

I recently read Jen Hatmaker's book, Seven, and there was a section of the book where she talked about honoring the Sabbath. It was a beautiful chapter and I cried through most of it. I cried because I longed for Sabbath with my family. I cried because I felt the Holy Spirit drawing me in and saying, this is a gift I have given YOU. Not just Jen.

SabbathSunday, observed by Christians as the day of worship and rest from work in commemoration of Christ's Resurrection

And then my mind got technical. Well, Ryan's schedule is cray cray. He sometimes works nights, sometimes works days, sometimes gets the day off, and we never know this until the afternoon of said schedule.

I know.

And Sunday's we have church so although it's rest form "work," it's not technically rest because we're driving and serving and get home late and wiped out. Well, we could do Saturday..No....

Simplify Your Life By Saying No

home life simplicity Oct 04, 2014

Simplify Your Life By Saying No

I've always been a yes girl. As long as I can remember, my answer is almost always yes. Someone needs something? I'm your girl. There's a party? I'll be there. Church is starting a new team? Sign me up! I'm not really sure if it's just in my blood or if I have an inner need to please everyone. It most certainly could be both. In fact, it is. I'm a people pleaser through and through. That's how God made me. I want people to be happy. I want them to experience love, laughter, and joy. But I can easily let my own insecurities take over and do it for the wrong reason.

As we move along in life get married, have kids, grow communities, AND continue to say yes to anything and everything, we start to feel the ill effects of a busy life. We can grow so accustomed to saying yes that we forget how to say no. And while pretty much everything I've said yes to is something that is important or needed, it doesn't mean that I was the one who should be doing it.

So how do we learn to say no?

It's...
