#offthebeam! What do you need to let go of?

Quit trying to be awesome and instead be wise

In Jen Hatmaker's new book, For the Love, she has a chapter titled "Worst Beam Ever." In it she compares our attempts at finding balance in our lives to a gymnast on a balance beam. Balance is kind of a whacked out word in this day and age. I mean, honestly. Even when we finally find "balance" it's gone the next day because no days are ever the same. No matter how hard you try. A kid is gonna get sick, you're gonna get stuck at all the red lights, you'll oversleep, overeat, forget to workout, yada yada yada. There is no such thing as balance.

We don't need to equally distribute ourselves everywhere. How awful would it be if we gave every single aspect of our lives the exact same amount of effort or time. But as we stand on our beams of life juggling our have-tos and want-tos we've got to throw some things off the beam so we can cross it and not completely fall off of it!

Off the Beam!

Over the past two years I've become the queen of saying no. It's been a battle and I haven't quite...

I may not be what you think I am

i may not be

Where on earth does the time go? I mean, didn't we just get out of school? And here we are again. Trying to squeeze every last drop out of the sunshine while struggling to wrap our brains around the thought of a schedule.

This summer has been one for the books. Between shipping thousands of planners, road trips, going to the beach, and staying up way too late, we've had a blast. But man, trying to be business owner slash the coolest mom in town is hard work. Who am I kidding? Just being a mom is hard work!

I constantly struggle with the guilt-trip I make up in my head. You're not good enough. You're destroying whatever is left of your poor children's childhood (or is it childhoods? I don't even know how to write words anymore). Who do you think you are? You don't know the first thing about running a business and you can't even keep your crap together! Read your own book, lady! Simplify!

But you know what? I don't have to be the cool mom and I certainly don't have to have my crap...

It's been a year...

faith life Nov 10, 2014

One year ago {this past weekend} our family made one of the hardest best decisions of our lives. We've made many hard decisions but this one hurt the worst. We knew it would. We prayed it wouldn't but deep down inside, we knew it would hurt. We didn't expect the hurt to last so long. And honestly, a lot of times, it still hurts.

When the easier thing to do would have been to stay, we left. We chose to be faithful to God instead of man. We chose to do what would be eternally better for us than what would be surely comfortable for a little while. We chose loyalty to God above loyalty to man.

We lost friends. Looking back I guess they weren't really true friends. And that's ok. Better to know that early on then after a ten year investment. But it didn't make it hurt any less.

We lost community. Or what we thought was community. But again, looking back, it wasn't community at all. Because now I know what community is. Now I know what God's idea of Church {with a big C} is and what man...

Simple Faith

faith life simplicity Oct 19, 2014

Simple faith. How can something seem so complicated yet actually be one of the simplest things we ever do in this life? And when we have that simple faith, it makes everything else fall into it's divine place just as it is meant to be.

Faith: confidence or trust in a person or thing

If I really believe what the Bible says, and I really believe that God works all things together for good, then all I really need is a little faith.

"Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you." Matthew 17:20

Then why is it so hard sometimes? Why do we get caught up in religion and works and he said she said? None of that even matters. When we have faith that God is who he says he is and that Jesus came to pay for us all, we have everything we need. Whether we're rich or poor, educated or not, mother or barren, father or son, black or white, Jesus is the only...

Simple Steps: One Step At a Time

faith life Oct 14, 2014

Take the first step in faith

It's been a little over a year since I wrote my first post on this here blog. Hard to believe how far I've come and at the same time, how far I have yet to go. But I wouldn't be here if I hadn't taken millions of simple steps. One simple step at a time. My very first post was on taking the first step and it's lead to endless possibilities, frustrations, joy, and pain.

I think of how different my life would look had I not taken the simple first step of publishing that first post. I was scared out of my mind. Thinking to myself, who do you think you are? A writer? Ha! That first step, as terrifying as it was, gave me strength. It gave me courage. With every post I became a little more brave. With every post, I became a little more seasoned.

And so it will be for the rest of my life. I will take one step towards what it is I feel God is telling me to do. The steps may not always pan out or lead me down the road I want. But at least I'll be moving forward. Even if it's just an...

Simply Sabbath

Simply Sabbath

I recently read Jen Hatmaker's book, Seven, and there was a section of the book where she talked about honoring the Sabbath. It was a beautiful chapter and I cried through most of it. I cried because I longed for Sabbath with my family. I cried because I felt the Holy Spirit drawing me in and saying, this is a gift I have given YOU. Not just Jen.

SabbathSunday, observed by Christians as the day of worship and rest from work in commemoration of Christ's Resurrection

And then my mind got technical. Well, Ryan's schedule is cray cray. He sometimes works nights, sometimes works days, sometimes gets the day off, and we never know this until the afternoon of said schedule.

I know.

And Sunday's we have church so although it's rest form "work," it's not technically rest because we're driving and serving and get home late and wiped out. Well, we could do Saturday..No....

Whose Cross Are You Carrying?

faith life Sep 15, 2014

We were never meant to carry the cross of sin

I recently heard a profound message on Luke 9:23 "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me." Now this wasn't just any message. God revealed some huge stuff to me and I just wanted to share it with you. Because maybe, maybe the cross you're trying to carry isn't the one He wants you carrying.

Our Cross

So what is the cross He's set before us? Our purpose. Our portion. And He asks us to take it up DAILY. Not when we feel like it. Not next week or next year. Every. Single. Day.

The pastor gave the analogy of giving your child a plate of food. Your child may not want all of the food but you know, as the parent, he needs that food. All of it. For the child to grow, thrive, and become the man he's supposed to be. And when God gives us our plate, our cross, our portion, we need to accept ALL of it, good or bad, whether we like it or not, to become ALL that He made us to be.

Sometimes all we want is the triple-layer...

Heavy. Burdened. Do You Feel It Too?

faith life Aug 15, 2014

Our Lives Begin To End The Day We Become Silent About Things That Matter

Heavy. Burdened. Do you feel it too? I don't know how else to describe how I've been feeling lately.  Children being beheaded, women being raped and murdered, men being martyred for their faith. Ferguson. Robin Williams. 27 MILLION HUMAN SLAVES in the world right now, as I type this.

And I'm sitting here in my living room, on my comfy sofa, with a MacBook on my lap. My iPhone is by my side which has been blowing up since 2 a.m. because there's a new healthy baby in the family that was delivered in a clean, warm, safe hospital. I have a hot cup of coffee that was made with freshly ground beans and all I had to do was push a freakin button. And I added cold half & half that I got out of my refrigerator because I like cream in my coffee.  Oh, and I have about four bibles to choose from for my daily reading. Four. While people are being murdered for smuggling them into their country.

The earth is groaning and trembling. Droughts, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis.

What Are You Talking About?

faith life Jul 31, 2014

Voices. They're everywhere. In our heads, on our phones, at our churches, in our homes, coming from the T.V., shouting from all of our social media outlets. Every. Where.

I often wonder if people even know how to make up their own minds anymore. We try to make educated decisions with limitless information right at our fingertips. We can pretty much guarantee that we'll find a thousand opinions and articles wherever we choose to look and we can be darn sure it's in agreement with us. Amiright?

Unfortunately, what goes in must come out. The conversations we have, the radio and T.V. stations we fill our minds with, the articles we read. These all shape our minds and our hearts then eventually flow from our lips.

But what comes out of the mouth gets its start in the heart. It’s from the heart that we vomit up evil arguments, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, lies, and cussing. That’s what pollutes. Matthew 15:18 MSG

For My Book Lovers: A Free Book From Audible

faith life Jul 17, 2014

If you love reading as much as I do, I'm sure you have a hard time finding enough hours in a day to finish all of the books on your list. Not to mention enough money in the bank to buy all of the books you want. I have a special treat for you, a free book from Audible.

This last year, I started using Audible. I know, I know. It's not the same as holding the book in your hands. But it's increased my "reading" tremendously. My husband doesn't really like to read but spends a lot of time in the car so we decided to sign up for Audible {for him}. Much to my surprise, I LOVE AUDIBLE! Who knew? It's actually quite enjoyable. My husband chooses the books {let's get real, I choose the books I want him to read} and then I get to listen to them while I walk or workout. Win-win.

So, even if you've never thought that audio books ain't yo thang, maybe they are. Imagine how many more books you'll finish this year! Plus, they can easily be listened to on your smartphone, kindle, tablet, or...
