Self care is a hot topic these days and everyone & their brother are jumping on the bandwagon. 

While I’m a huge fan of true self care, and I know there are plenty of people out there that need it and don’t do it, I also think some people have gotten it a little twisted.

When you’re using self care as an escape from life. Instead of doing the inner work first to be set free from whatever crap is going on in there, that’s not self care.

People are escaping with binge shopping, binge eating, drinking, Netflix, and other mindless things. None of those things are bad and we should all be able to have some mindless fun once in a while.

BUT!

True self care means you’re taking care of yourself.

That requires discipline. True self care is actually a little less fun that it sounds.

How Sleeping Smarter Changed My Life

About a year ago, I read the book, Sleep Smarter by Shawn Stevenson. It completely changed the quality of my sleep and my overall health. Now, I'm a huge fan of sleep. I love naps, napping in the car, napping on a Sunday afternoon, snuggling in to my cozy bed early... basically any kind of sleep. I'm a fan.

But what I didn't realize was the "kind" of sleep you get is far more important than the amount you get. Now, I'm not going to rewrite the book because you can certainly read that yourself but I'm going to share with you, some of the key things I do now to get "smarter" sleep.

As an entrepreneur, optimal sleep is crucial so that I can be a good business owner and not be too exhausted to still be a good wife and mom.

Prepping for sleep

Get lots of natural sunlight. This helps keep your body's hormones balanced and reminds your body that it's time to be awake!

It's funny how we Americans love to complicate anything and EVERYTHING.  Even when it comes to our health, we complicate it. We have to try the latest fad diet or the trending workout craze, join the fancy gym, or buy expensive equipment.

Guess what. You DON'T have to join a fancy gym or hire a nutritionist to get yourself healthy! Say what???!

The truth of the matter is, we already have everything we need to live a healthy life. It really doesn’t have to be that complicated. We were made to be active and to eat healthy food. Food is fuel so there’s no reason to stop eating it.
